Coffee's story begins in the highlands of Ethiopia and crosses the Red Sea to Yemen, where the port of Mocha gave the world its first taste of the trade. From there, qahwa spread through the markets, mosques, and majlis of the Arab world, not as a commodity, but as a gesture. To serve coffee was to say: you are welcome here.
More Than a Drink, A Language of Hospitality
Gulf hospitality has its own grammar, and coffee is its first word. The host pours with the right hand, fills the cup only a third full, and keeps it flowing until the guest gently shakes the finjan to signal enough.
